Today, I went to the ward service rather than going out to a church because I had to work at 2pm. The service is held by our patient life group, which is a group of Sierra Leonians who work with the hospital to bring culturally appropriate activities to the people. They also help with the emotional and spiritual needs of the patients.
All the patients, the caregivers, the nurses, some members of the ship crew, the day workers, and the patient life staff gathered in Ward A and the service began with some scripture reading and prayer. We then had a time of worship and African praise and worship and dance. The spirit in the room was so awesome to see the sick and healing patients praising God. It was a wonderful atmosphere! After that, a message was given about Jesus feeding the 5000 and how God can use each of us in a powerful way. One of the patient life staff members translated the message into Krio. After the message, there was a small remembrance for the anniversary of 9/11 in the US, and then the service was done. It ran for about 1 hour and then I was able to spend some time with the patients before leaving. They were happy to have "gone to church" with those who also take care of them. After the service, a few of the day workers told me that I can't dance and they are going to have to teach me how to dance the African way :) Dancing will me the next thing I'll need to learn. I guess I'm in the right place to learn it though. Excited for all the Lord is doing... Lord, please use me for your work, to show your love to all those around me and to be your hands to touch your people.
