Some of you may have read my facebook status this evening:
EVERY ONE DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND PLEASE SEND UP A PRAYER, OR A KIND THOUGHT FOR A LITTLE BOY CALLED NATHAN! HE IS 10 YEARS OLD AND HAS A MASSIVE TUMOR GROWING ON THE SIDE OF HIS HEAD. THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO BUT FLY HIM HOME TO BE WITH HIS FAMILY IN HIS LAST DAYS.... PLEASE PRAY THAT HE MAKES IT HOME AND FOR A SAFE AND PAIN FREE JOURNEY FROM SIERRA LEONE TO HEAVEN, VIA THE CONGO ....♥
I copied the status from my cabin mate Jessica, who was this patient's nurse and was the patient that I had donated blood to today.
Our nursing supervisor was able to arrange to get Nathan near the airport tonight so that he can fly home to the Congo tomorrow morning to be with his family to die. This evening about 15 of us nurses met in the ICU to pray for him before he left. It was very emotional. He was crying as we moved him from the bed to a wheelchair. His tumor is about the size of a third of his body and it is draining blood, pus and is closing off his carotid artery. Once he saw all of us, he stopped crying and prayed with us. We then wheeled him to the gangway and to the dock, where we all stood as we said our last goodbyes to the sweet child that has changed us all. It was sad to see something that may have been easily treated in a developed land, not be able to be treated here. However, there is peace in knowing we have a God who is in control of all things and knows why this child has gone through what he has. I pray he has a safe and comfortable journey home to the Congo and that he can be with his family as he leaves this earth to go see his Maker. Pray for Nathan and his grandmother and his family. I pray he makes it home. Until we see him again in glory!!
