Bureh Beach

This weekend, I was off from work and decided to go away for the weekend. Four other girls and myself went to Bureh Beach, a beach that is about 1.5 hours away from where the ship is docked. The beach was beautiful. We arrived at about 3pm (one of the girls was visiting the orphanage that morning) and made arrangements with the men there to spend the night in tents that they would set up underneath some huts. We also arranged to have supper served on the beach and to have a bonfire at night. This was my first experience spending the night outdoors. I had never been camping or anything of the sort and so I was skeptical about the experience, and now that it is done, I can't say that I love it :)

It got dark pretty quickly, but the sunset was very nice. The view of the sun going down reflecting on the water was so amazing. Enjoy the pics!

The water is nice, not like the water in the Caribbean but much better than the beaches in New England. That night, after dark, we received our dinner of red snapper, with the head still on! and yam chips. It was really good, despite not being able to see what I was eating. The flashlights came in handy.

The bonfire was nice. We joined another group who was there also from Mercy Ships for the bonfire and we roasted marshmallows. It began to rain and we went to our tents at about 8:30pm. It was so dark that it felt so much later and I could only think of all the people without electricity who live by the sun. By 7, it is dark, and thus the end of the day.

That night, it rained and poured and the winds were strong. The tent was falling and was saturated midway through the night and myself and Lynette didn't get any sleep. By the next morning, we were ready to head back to the ship. We enjoyed the beach and some breakfast for a few hours and watched as the local people went fishing in their boats. Very cool to see them go out and then come back with huge fish, turtles and crabs.

I was thankful for the beach experience, but can't say I would do an overnight on the beach again :)
